Jobs For Math Lovers

If you love math, and want to make a living working with numbers, you're in luck. With some planning and knowledge, you can easily parlay your mastery of math into some very attractive numbers - a high salary.

The fact is that nearly every industry relies on numbers in one sense or another, whether it's for forecasts, analysis, or research.

Here are four high-paying, fulfilling careers for people who love to crunch numbers.

1. Actuaries
Many industries - insurance especially - need someone to figure out the probability that certain events will occur, and how to protect their bottom line in the event that they do. So if the idea of being a "professional fortuneteller" that relies on numbers instead of crystal balls appeals to you, get the skills and knowledge needed to become an actuary with a degree in business, statistics, or economics.

The payoff for a good actuary job can be hefty. The median annual wage for actuaries is $82,800, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. And those on the top end of the pay scale can easily pull in more than $100,000 a year.

2. Marketing Managers
Forget probabilities...what if you were able to predict the demand for a certain product or offering? Or had the ability to identify new markets and competitive threats posed by other companies?

These kinds of predictions are made every day by marketing professionals. Nearly every company relies on marketers in their day-to-day operations and for their long-term planning. Not surprisingly, the person who manages this work, the marketing manager, is paid quite well, with an annual mean wage of $118,160.

To start towards a career as a marketing manager, an undergraduate degree in marketing and sales would be a great first step.

3. Accountants
As an accountant, your clients will provide you with their financial information. From there, you apply your mathematical expertise to the data to prepare their statements and complete their tax documents. For a lover of math, it could be a dream job, as much of the work involves just you and the numbers.

The pay for top accountants can be dreamy too. The U.S. Department of Labor lists the median annual income for an accountant at $54,630, with federal accountants averaging a yearly wage of $78,665.

The years ahead promise a higher than average growth in accounting jobs due largely to stricter guidelines on financial oversight for companies. So start preparing today by looking into bachelor's degree programs in accounting.

4. Information Technology Workers
Nearly all computer languages, networks, and systems are primarily based on numbers and math. Appropriately enough, an aptitude for math often translates into mastery over - and interest in - information technology.

IT workers are responsible for planning and facilitating all computer-related functions and activities for corporations and organizations. It's a far-reaching job that's essential in every field. The average salary for top pros in this field comes in over six figures, $101,580.

Prepare to put your math skills to the test in an IT career by exploring degree programs in IT and computer science.

As you can see, a love for numbers really opens up your job prospects and can be very rewarding, both financially and in terms of fulfillment. So embrace your inner mathematician, and let your unique skills land you a great new job.

Growing Gains - 6 Jobs With High-Rising Numbers

In a competitive job market, maximizing the potential of your education could hinge on a question of numbers: How many workers might be hired in a given field?

Since crystal balls aren't exactly what one might call reliable, the U.S. Department of Labor has done some projecting of its own when it comes to employment outlook.

Here's a closer look at six of the fastest growing occupations, in terms of numbers hired, through 2016.

1. Network systems and data communications analysts perform a number of tasks in relation to data communications systems, like the Internet, including designing, analyzing, testing, and assessing systems and their performance. Analysts might also supervise computer programmers and work as specialists who handle the interfacing of computers and communications equipment.

How Fast Is It Growing? This is considered the leading occupation in terms of the percentage of growth in jobs. In large part, this is due to the increasing use of computers and information technology. The rise from 262,000 employees in 2006 to 402,000 in 2016 represents a 53.4 percent increase over that span - that's 140,000 new jobs.

How Do I Get Started? Many jobs require a bachelor's degree, although some might only require a two-year degree in computer science or an information technology-related field.

Salary: $73,800 a year

2. Dental hygienists are responsible for examining patients' teeth and gums, removing deposits from teeth, and providing other types of preventive dental care, like showing patients how to care for their teeth. They also record the presence of diseases or abnormalities.

How Fast Is It Growing? A total of 217,000 dental hygienists will be employed in 2016, up 30.1 percent from 2006. Population growth, tendency of older people retaining teeth, and an increased focus on preventive dental care has contributed to a demand for these workers. Dental hygienists are also increasingly taking on duties previously completed by dentists.

How Do I Get Started? An associate's degree or certificate in dental hygiene is typically necessary for practice in a private dental office.

Salary: $66,950 a year

3. Computer software engineers rely on their knowledge of computer science and mathematical analysis to develop, design, test, and evaluate the software and systems that operate our computers. Their tasks are evolving quickly and reflect the ever-changing landscape of computer technology. Computer games, word processing, and operating systems are among their areas of expertise.

How Fast Is It Growing? A 44.6 percent increase in jobs from 2006-2016 puts computer software engineers near the top of the growth scale. This growth will be the result of businesses and other organizations embracing and integrating new technologies and seeking to maximize the efficiency of their computer systems.

How Do I Get Started? The prospects are very good for job applicants with at least a bachelor's degree in software engineering or computer science and with some work experience.

Salary: $87,900 a year

4. Physical therapist assistants help physic al therapists treat victims of accidents or people with disabling conditions. The job involves working to improve patient mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or alleviate physical disabilities. A physical therapist might prepare physical therapy equipment, assist with exercises, or apply hot and cold packs while recording and reporting patients' responses to treatment.

How Fast Is It Growing? Consumer demand for physical therapy services is on the rise, helping employment for physical therapy aides to grow much faster than average for all occupations. The main reasons: an increasing elderly population, a baby-boom generation entering the prime age for illness, and an improved survival rate for trauma patients. There were 60,000 employed in 2006, and that number is expected to rise to 80,000 in 2016.

How do I Get Started? Most physical therapists earn an associate's degree from an accredited physical therapist assistants program.

Salary: $46,300 a year

5. Financial analysts and personal financial advisors share their expertise on investment strategies with businesses and individuals. Financial analysts generally focus on a specific industry, region, or type of product. Personal financial advisors assess and individual clients' assets, liabilities, cash flow, insurance coverage, tax status, and financial objectives to develop sound money strategies.

How Fast Is It Growing? Financial analysts and personal financial advisors held 397,000 jobs in 2006. This number will grow to 543,000 in 2016, an increase of 38.8 percent for both. The peak years of retirement savings and personal investments of a large baby-boom generation are creating a need for more people to seek help from experts.

How Do I Get Started? A bachelor's degree in finance, business administration, or accounting is considered highly desirable for financial analysts. Coursework in statistics, economics, and business is required. Knowledge of accounting policies and procedures, corporate budgeting, and financial analysis methods also is recommended. An advanced business degree such as an MBA can be an asset in this competitive field.

Salary: $66,590 a year

6. Substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors offers counseling and advice to people dealing with problems such as alcohol, tobacco, drugs, gambling, and eating disorders. Some counselors work at therapeutic communities where people with addictions live while being treated.

How Fast Is It Growing? he number of counselors will rise from 83,000 to 112,000 by 2016, a 34.3 percent increase over the 10-year period. The rising number of people suffering from depression and other serious mood disorders has helped create a demand for counselors, according to a recent study by jobfox.com. That growth, coupled with the need to replace people leaving the field, make this a solid choice for those who seek a stable, rewarding career.

How Do I Get Started? A master's degree is usually required to be licensed as a counselor. Some states accept applicants with a bachelor's degree and appropriate counseling coursework.

Salary: $39,670 a year

Make $30 an Hour Without a Four-Year Degree

For job seekers without a four-year degree, breaking the $25-an-hour barrier can be a challenge. But with more technical certification and associate's degree programs than ever, many well-paying career options are accessible in a broad range of industries.
The following is a list of lucrative careers for those without a four-year degree, presented with median annual salary data from PayScale.com. That figure is then broken down to an hourly rate by dividing by 2080, the typical number of working hours in a year, according to PayScale.

1. Sales director
"If you are interested in a career change, but do not want to commit to further education, consider a sales career," says Sharon Reed Abboud, the author of "All Moms Work, Short-Term Career Strategies for Long-Range Success." Sales directors oversee sales staff to help meet objectives, plan and implement sales programs, and work to maintain budgets, among many other duties. While formal training is not a requirement for this position, sales experience and an outgoing personality are vital, according to Abboud. "Successful sales persons can often have the opportunity to climb the career ladder to increasingly lucrative management positions," she explains.

Sales director: $91,900/ $44 per hour

2. Security administrators, computer network
"As technology increases its reach, cyber crime is becoming a major concern for companies," says Debra Yergen, author of the "Creating Job Security Resource Guide." Security administrators work to prevent, troubleshoot, and repair security breaches while educating network users on cyber safety. Certification or relevant experience is essential to entry to this field, especially in absence of a four-year degree.

Security administrators, computer network: $72,000/ $35 per hour

3. Elevator installer/repairer
Elevator assembly, installation and maintenance are the main responsibilities of this position. Participating in an apprenticeship program coupled with paid on-the-job training is the standard, and workers must pass a licensing exam. Union membership is typically required by employers, and unions can help to ensure "an excellent salary, benefits, and pension," says Marky Stein, author of "Get a Great Job When You Don't Have a Job."

Elevator installer/repairer: $67,100/ $32 per hour

4. Real estate broker
Usually commission-based, real estate brokers' salaries are sensitive to shifts in the economy. Despite the current real estate market, Yergen predicts "resurgence in salary in 2010 with the extension of the housing tax credit." Brokers are tasked with understanding real estate markets, performing transactions, and advising buyers on their financing options. Additionally, real estate brokers must pass a written exam and maintain a license.

Real estate broker: $65,400/ $31 per hour

5. Nuclear medicine technologist
"Nuclear medicine technologists administer a type of drug called radiopharmaceuticals to patients and create diagnostic images that ultimately determine the presence of a disease," explains Yergen. With an increasingly large middle-aged and elderly population and advances in technology, job growth for nuclear medicine technologists is likely to remain steady. A certificate or an associate's degree is needed, and a license is a requirement for many employers and states.

Nuclear medicine technologist: $64,100/ $31 per hour

6. Radiation therapist
Administering radiation treatment to cancer patients is the main role of a radiation therapist. "As radiation therapists continue to be a critical part of the medical radiation oncology team, it will translate into an uptick of jobs," predicts Yergen. There is also room for personal advancement in this field, with opportunities that include teaching and research. Training through an associate's degree or certification program is necessary, and a license is required in many states.

Radiation therapist: $63,500 / $31 per hour

7. Construction manager
Construction managers oversee the construction of structures, facilities, and systems, and are often on call around the clock. On-the-job construction experience and/or completing a construction management certification program provide entry to this position.

Construction manager: $63,400/ $30 per hour

8. Air traffic controller
"As an air traffic controller, your job will be dedicated to keeping the skies safe. It is a very demanding and rewarding occupation." says Abboud. Providing an essential role in aviation, air traffic controllers ensure that planes maintain a safe distance between each other and help to coordinate efficient scheduling.

With most positions employed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), air traffic controllers must complete a FAA-approved education program and pass a pre-employment test.

Air traffic controller: $63,000/ $30 per hour

9. Video game designer
Video game designers create the storyline and structure of a video game and determine the rules of play. They typically need to possess an understanding of software design and computer programming, and a degree or certification from a technical school can provide an advantage. Although currently at a point of high popularity, video games tend to go through phases of increased and decreased popularity, cautions Yergen.

Video game designer: $62,300/ $30 per hour

10. MRI technologist
MRI technologists train in programs available through hospitals, colleges and universities to earn a certificate or associate's degree. With more doctors' offices and clinics providing diagnostic services, demand is higher than ever, says Yergen. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), "Health care will generate 3 million new wage and salary jobs between 2006 and 2016, more than any other industry."

MRI technologist: $61,000/ $29 per hour

QTEL "office box"

Qtel’s enhanced ‘Office in a Box’ solution is finding increased favour with businesses across Qatar, helping to drive efficiencies and boost international marketing efforts.

In 2009, it has become one of the most popular solutions for small and medium sized enterprises in Qatar. The service, which brings together secure broadband access, IP telephony, and business class e-mail and web hosting services in a practical communication package is increasingly becoming the preferred choice for small and medium businesses.

Qtel Business Solutions worked with representatives from more than 75 Qatari companies to examine how the solution could help them, and how Qtel could enhance the solution to provide the best possible service, at a recent workshop at the W Hotel in Doha.

The workshop was organised as part of Qtel’s “fuel your senses” campaign around its refreshed brand, designed to demonstrate the difference that Qtel makes in the lives of people every day of the week.

Feedback from sessions like these is continuously fed into the development process of new solutions from Qtel, to ensure companies benefit from the highest levels of effectiveness. ‘Office in a Box’ has continued to be upgraded since its launch in 2008, to ensure that it matches the needs of Qatar’s fast-growing small business sector.

The upgraded and enhanced ‘Office in a Box’ and many of the activities connected to it have been designed to stimulate different senses. The newly upgraded “Office in a Box” now offers increased broadband Internet access at no extra cost as standard and new internet access upgrade options.

In addition, ‘Office in a Box’ provides a range of IP telephony handset upgrade options, increased e-mail storage and new call-forwarding functionality, to ensure that it fully supports the needs of businesses across Qatar.

Also included are customer LAN options to make installation of the product quick and cost effective. Call forwarding is included as standard for five numbers of the customers’ choice

Rents likely to fall as suburbs ‘lure’

By Ramesh Mathew/Staff Reporter

The availability of new residential properties outside Doha these days at lower rents will prompt many city residents to move out in the coming months, say real estate agents.

The demand for residential properties in the city is falling and inquiries dwindling with each passing day, officials of some prominent real estate firms told Gulf Times yesterday.

“When a big building in Abdulla bin Thani area was earmarked for demolition, most of its tenants – that included families – preferred to shift into properties outside the city limit as rents there were less compared to properties available in the city,” the manager of a real estate firm manager said.

He added that inquiries made by his firm revealed that even owners of most commercial establishments operating from that building Abdulla bin Thani area had little hesitation to move out to properties outside the city.

While commercial properties in Doha, particularly in locations such as on Salwa Road and Airport Road were still in demand, the same could not be said about the other available options in the city.

Saleh Shabban, a real estate agent, confirmed that most inquiries were received for locations with adequate space for parking.

“Most entrepreneurs also seek office spaces in locations having less traffic congestion,” he said.

Endorsing similar sentiments another real estate professional said when infrastructure facilities in newly-developed locations were completed there would be more demand for properties there.

“While considering shifting, residents are also looking for the availability of facilities such as travel convenience, proximity to schools and healthcare institutions, and of course the presence of shopping malls,” he observed.

In Wakrah, many new ventures, including hospitals and clinics are coming up and this could be the reason why residents are looking for accommodation in the area, added the agent.

Inquiries in the real estate market found that Wakrah was fast becoming one of the most sought after city suburbs for residents due to the availability of a large number of new accommodations. Advertisements placed in the newspapers are proof of this.

Most real estate agents generally feel that it would take a considerably longer time than expected for recovery in upmarket areas such as West Bay and its neighbouring locations.

“Even though a large number of properties are lying vacant in these areas, the number of fresh inquiries is bare minimum,” said an agent, who claimed dealing only with high-end clients.

The availability of independent villas for as low as QR7,500 and 8,000 in locations like Ain Khaled has prompted some residents, who were occupying two- or three-bedroom apartments in places like Muntazah for QR8,500 and QR9,500, to shift there, another agent said.

“This is an example of a mass migration, from the city to the suburbs; that could happen in the coming months,” he added.

MES Indian School, the largest expatriate school in Qatar, held a three-day long extravaganza marking the 35th Annual Day celebrations. The star studded event saw cultural activities and honouring ceremonies.

“As we are in this part of the world, we are expected to be good citizens, curious about the culture and development of the host country. We are all the ambassadors of India to this land which demands from us to uphold the values the Indians have cherished through ages,” Deepa Gopalan Wadhwa, Ambassador of India, exhorted the students durng the opening event.

She also noted that the Qatar Government’s magnanimity to provide land for setting up a school was recognition for the valuable contributions Indians have made for the growth and development of the nation.

Dr Latha Pillai, Pro-vice Chancellor, IGNOU, New Delhi; Suresh Krishna, popular film celebrity; Alwin Antony, Malayalam film director and producer; Hamad Ali Hassan Al Sulaity; Quraishy, Second Secretary at the Indian Embassy and Prof. Sunny Thomas, Indian National Coach for Rifle Shooting, were the guests during the three day event.

Students placed high on list of the CBSE were also given away gifts and certificates. 28 students of the MES Off Campus who graduated from IGNOU were awarded with the certificates by Dr Pillai.

Sports stars of the school were awarded on the second day. The individual champions of the 35th annual athletic meet, in different categories from different sections of the school, were given away trophies and certificates. K Kiran Chandra who topped the Gulf Chemistry Olympiad 2009 was also honoured at the function.

The cultural programmes included a thematic programme titled ‘Vikas Ka Phahiya’ (The wheel of Progress) depicting the development of MES over the years and its role in moulding the young generation through quality education was staged on a massive 32m long stage built in the Mughal architectural style. “The Tempest”, the popular Shakespearean comedy highlighting the theme “Forgiveness is divine”, presented by the English Department of the School stole the heart of the audience.

About 2000 students from all sections of the school took part in the cultural programmes, on the three days, consisting of a variety of elegant and scintillating dances, super skits and other items took the audience into a dream world of entertainment. The events depicting the various dance forms of India, multi-lingual and multi ethnic, represented a miniature of Indian art and culture on a Doha stage. A skit to bring awareness among the people about the spread of H1N1 virus presented on the last two days was a major feature of the celebration.

QATAR TO CUT CORPORATE TAX TO 10%

Qatar to cut corporate tax to 10%: Kamal

REUTERS DOHA Qatar plans to cut corporate tax to 10 percent next year, Minister of Economy and Finance HE Yousef Hussain Kamal said on Wednesday, in a move by the Gulf Arab State to attract foreign investors.

The tax rate is currently as much as 35 percent.

The world’s biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas is spending billions of dollars to develop its non-oil economy to curb reliance on oil and gas income, which makes up over 60 percent of gross domestic product.

“There is a tax bill about to be issued that would bring down the tax to 10 percent.

It would be implemented as of 2010,” Kamal told a conference in remarks broadcast by Al Jazeera television.

“(It) can be categorised as lowering barriers toward foreign investments in Qatar,” Kapil Chadda, managing director and head of global banking at HSBC in Doha, said of the tax cut.

“From a macro-economic point of view, there will not be a big impact (as) only foreign companies pay local taxes not local companies,” Chadda said.

“The total tax revenue in Qatar is still quite modest from an overall revenue point of view.” Qatar has the world’s friendliest tax climate, according to Forbes 2009 Tax Misery & Reform Index, which evaluates policies that attract or repel capital and talent.

Qatar projects a $1.6 billion budget deficit for the fiscal year ending in March 2010.

But with oil prices picking up from last December’s low of $32 a barrel, the budget is expected to move into the black.

“There will be a significant increase in oil and gas revenues, based on new capacity coming on stream,” Chadda said.

“So you will probably see a much larger budget surplus next year than previous budgets.” Last month, the head of the Qatar Financial Centre Authority (QFCA) told Reuters that 10- 15 global firms would soon start operations in Qatar.
