MES SCHOOL CELEBRATE ITS 35TH ANNUAL DAY


MES Indian School, the largest expatriate school in Qatar, held a three-day long extravaganza marking the 35th Annual Day celebrations. The star studded event saw cultural activities and honouring ceremonies.

“As we are in this part of the world, we are expected to be good citizens, curious about the culture and development of the host country. We are all the ambassadors of India to this land which demands from us to uphold the values the Indians have cherished through ages,” Deepa Gopalan Wadhwa, Ambassador of India, exhorted the students durng the opening event.

She also noted that the Qatar Government’s magnanimity to provide land for setting up a school was recognition for the valuable contributions Indians have made for the growth and development of the nation.

Dr Latha Pillai, Pro-vice Chancellor, IGNOU, New Delhi; Suresh Krishna, popular film celebrity; Alwin Antony, Malayalam film director and producer; Hamad Ali Hassan Al Sulaity; Quraishy, Second Secretary at the Indian Embassy and Prof. Sunny Thomas, Indian National Coach for Rifle Shooting, were the guests during the three day event.

Long service awards to 22 members of the staff who have completed 10 years of continuous service at the school were given away. The high achievers of the school including toppers in class 10 and 12 CBSE and Kerala Board examinations of March 2009 were honoured with gold medals and cash awards. Students placed high on list of the CBSE were also given away gifts and certificates. 28 students of the MES Off Campus who graduated from IGNOU were awarded with the certificates by Dr Pillai.

Sports stars of the school were awarded on the second day. The individual champions of the 35th annual athletic meet, in different categories from different sections of the school, were given away trophies and certificates. K Kiran Chandra who topped the Gulf Chemistry Olympiad 2009 was also honoured at the function.

The cultural programmes included a thematic programme titled ‘Vikas Ka Phahiya’ (The wheel of Progress) depicting the development of MES over the years and its role in moulding the young generation through quality education was staged on a massive 32m long stage built in the Mughal architectural style. “The Tempest”, the popular Shakespearean comedy highlighting the theme “Forgiveness is divine”, presented by the English Department of the School stole the heart of the audience.

About 2000 students from all sections of the school took part in the cultural programmes, on the three days, consisting of a variety of elegant and scintillating dances, super skits and other items took the audience into a dream world of entertainment. The events depicting the various dance forms of India, multi-lingual and multi ethnic, represented a miniature of Indian art and culture on a Doha stage. A skit to bring awareness among the people about the spread of H1N1 virus presented on the last two days was a major feature of the celebration.
